WKU prepares for opening of fall 2013 semester

Classes for the fall 2013 semester at WKU begin Aug. 26. Here are some key events and reminders:

*Class of 2017 arrives: First-year students will begin arriving Aug. 18 for M.A.S.T.E.R. (Making Academic and Social Transitions Educationally Rewarding) Plan activities. M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan continues through Aug. 22. A M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Commuter Program for first-year commuter students will be held Aug. 18-19.

M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan features educational workshops and informational sessions as well as numerous other activities including Convocation, Class of 2017 photo, a concert by Andy Grammer, CloseUP Theater Troupe performance, WKandU street festival, Big Red’s Blitz community service event, and Campus and Community Involvement Fair.

*Welcome to WKU: In addition to welcoming the Class of 2017 at 8 p.m. Aug. 18, WKU President Gary Ransdell will welcome international students at 5 p.m. Aug. 14; Confucius Institute Chinese teachers at 5 p.m. Aug. 15; new WKU faculty members at 6 p.m. Aug. 16; Gatton Academy students at 5 p.m. Aug. 19; WKU Forensics Team at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 21; Honors College freshmen at 5 p.m. Aug. 26; and Navitas students at 5 p.m. Aug. 30.

*Residence halls open: Residence halls open for all non-M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan participants at 8 a.m. Aug. 22.

*Academic Transitions Program: ATP sessions will be conducted Aug. 22 at the Knicely Conference Center.

*New building opening: The dedication of The Medical Center-WKU Health Sciences Complex will be held at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 22 at the new facility at 700 First Ave. in Bowling Green.

*Graduate student reception: A welcome reception for graduate students will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Augenstein Alumni Center Grand Ballroom.

*Opening convocation: The President’s Opening Convocation for faculty and staff will begin at 8 a.m. Aug. 23 at Van Meter Hall.

*Welcome Back WKU Festival: The annual event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 28 at the South Lawn.

*Military Science ceremony: The Hilltopper Battalion Army ROTC will conduct its annual activation ceremony for new cadets at 4 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Diddle Arena auxiliary gym.

*WKU football kicks off: The Hilltoppers open the 2013 season at 6 p.m. Aug. 31 against Kentucky at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn. The Football Fan Fest will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Knicely Conference Center.

*Freshman Assembly: The annual event for first-year students will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 4 at Diddle Arena. The guest speaker will be Dr. James B. Maas, a leading authority and international consultant on sleep and performance and author of Sleep to Win! Dr. Maas also will speak to WKU faculty and staff at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 4 at Gary Ransdell Hall Auditorium.

*Renovation update: The two-year renovation of the Dero Downing Student Union is continuing. The WKU Store will be open for the fall semester on the ground floor with The Fresh Food Company, Starbucks and YoBlendz open on the first floor.

As the project continues during the 2013-14 year, Papa John’s, Chick-fil-A, Izzi’s and Topper Grille are moving to the Topper Café on the South Lawn.

As a reminder, the WKU Restaurant Group office, the ID Center and WKU Postal Services remain in Garrett Conference Center, room 100, with Student Activities and Student Government Association in Cravens Library, room 13.

*New department heads: Two departments in Potter College of Arts & Letters have new department heads – Dr. Rob Hale, Department of English; and Dr. Scott Harris, Department of Music.

*WKU on social media: Many offices and departments at WKU are using social media to connect with students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members. Learn more at WKU’s Social Media directory at http://www.wku.edu/social/
